Planned Parenthood Sues Arizona 9/14/09
Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law in July new restrictions on abortion that Planned Parenthood Arizona says will severely hinder access to reproductive health care, particularly for women in rural areas and girls under the age of 18. The organization says the new law is designed to make accessing abortion care in Arizona more complicated while also making it difficult for medical providers to provide accessible, affordable care. On Monday September 14th, 2009 Planned Parenthood sued the state of Arizona over the provisions that are contained in three abortion bills scheduled to take effect Sept. 30, 2009. The lawsuit was filed in Maricopa County Superior Court There are three major components of the new legislation that Planned Parenthood is challenging — 1. A provision where minors must not only have parental consent for an abortion but now must have that consent notarized by a notary public. 2. A new requirement that says women must make a face-to-face visit to the abortion provider within 24 hours of the procedure. 3. A requirement prohibiting advanced nurse practitioners from performing clinical abortions. Patti Caldwell, the chief operating officer of Planned Parenthood Arizona Stated “Other than the outright abortion ban attempted a number of years ago, this is the most severe law the legislature (Arizona) has passed in a very long time, in that it is designed to make it more difficult for women to access services,” Also “They took every restriction Governor Napolitano had vetoed in the past and put it into this bill.” Planned Parenthood says all three of the new requirements do nothing but create barriers for women who seek abortion care.
